The staff and volunteers of Kaua‘i Hospice started moving into their new home yesterday at the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Center for Compassion.
Gailene Wong from the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation presented a check to the hospice for $750,000 yesterday. The check tops off the organization’s $2.9 million capital campaign to build the new facility that is located at 4457 Pahe‘e St.
The building will be the headquarters for the only hospice on the island.
“Our campaign lasted one year; we are now moving into the building,” said Liana Soong, the hospice’s development director and community liaison. “The official grand opening will be Aug. 18.”
Soong said it is the first facility that Kauai Hospice has ever owned since 1983, when the organization was born, operated by part-time volunteers.
Since then, the hospice has turned into a professionally staffed organization with specially trained volunteers and with hundreds of volunteers ready to assist.
Soong said the new building’s conference center will be available for the public to use for meetings.
“The conference center was built with the community in mind,” said Soong.
