A day after the county’s battle with former police chief K.C. Lum nearly came to a boil, Kaua‘i reached a settlement with acting chief Clayton Arinaga to resolve his “whistleblower” lawsuit against the county, the KPD and Lum.
Arinaga filed his lawsuit earlier this year alleging he was subjected to adverse actions by Lum in retaliation for reporting to Lum that three vice officers should be investigated for alleged violations of state and federal laws stemming from a trip to Maui.
According to a press release issued from Mayor Bryan Baptiste’s office late yesterday afternoon, the county — on the advice of counsel regarding the potential for an adverse decision, as well as potentially having to pay for the attorneys fees of Arinaga — decided to settle the lawsuit and focus on mending the maligned police department.
