KAPA‘A — Kaua‘i’s boys showed no mercy for the Kapa‘a boys basketball team on their last night of play, trouncing them 73-46 in front of not only the home crowd, but statewide television.
At one point in the third quarter, Kaua‘i held a 30-point lead. The closest Kapa‘a got was when it pulled within 12 points.
Tyrus Ceria-Lux, who came up with 15 points, said the team didn’t feel any extra pressure because of OC16’s presence, nor did they put on a special show for them.
“We went in thinking there were no cameras,” the junior Red Raider said. “We just wanted to perform for our parents.”
For sure, but they also wanted to continue the win streak they’ve been enjoying for the last batch of games.
“We didn’t want to lose because we’ve been having a good thing going on,” he said.
Fellow junior Jordan Cox had a good thing going on as well with four 3-pointers and a pair of deuces for 16 points on the game.
“We’re just clicking right now,” Cox said. “We’re building more confidence because we’ve been winning right now.”
Coach Ipo Yoshioka was more than happy with the end result of last night’s game, but was mostly happy about how the team played together.
“We seem to have come together at the right time,” he said.
Kaua‘i High had a rough start, losing Round 1 of Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation play to Waimea. They turned it around, taking Round 2 earlier this week.
“Their focus is lot better from when we first started (the season),” he said. “You want to keep the momentum going from the second round.”
Kaua‘i plays Waimea for the KIF championship Monday at 7 p.m. at Kaua‘i High School gym.
