Trained volunteers at Wilcox Memorial Hospital have been providing Healing Touch to patients during their hospitalization for more than 10 years.
Through a grant from the Annie Sinclair Knudsen Memorial Fund, Healing Touch Level One classes are available to those interested in volunteering at Wilcox.
Scholarships are available for seven students. Last April, the grant provided training to eight new Healing Touch Volunteers.
A Level One class is scheduled for Feb. 10-11. Scholarship recipients are expected to give 70 hours of volunteer time in a six-month period following the training.
“Patients or families can request Healing Touch by filling out the brochure that is available from the nursing staff, or by simply asking their nurse or doctor,” Savitri Kumaran said in a release.
Kumaran is a Certified Healing Touch Practitioner and instructor, as well as a registered nurse at Wilcox. She coordinates the Healing Touch volunteer program.
Healing Touch provides care and comfort through gentle, non-invasive touch and energy-based techniques to reduce pain and enhance the healing process.
“It is not uncommon for a patient complaining of pain and discomfort to become relaxed and fall fast asleep before the treatment is completed,” Kumaran said.
