Maria Tumbaga celebrated her 95th birthday on Jan. 23.
She was born in 1912, the same year that Arizona became the 48th state, the Girl Scouts were formed and the Titanic sank. She is truly a part of history, according to her proud family.
Over 100 of Mrs. Tumbaga’s family and friends gathered at her Kekaha home on Jan. 27 to honor her life and legacy. Relatives came from other islands and grandchildren came from as far as Oakland, Calif, New York, NY, Garland, Tex., Milwaukee, Wisc. and even London, England.
Four generations of the family enjoyed live musical entertainment by Marie and Stan Yadao, a multimedia presentation featuring a slideshow of treasured pictures, some going as far back as her teenage years in the Philippines and a reading of “Ode to Mama,” an ongoing poem written by her daughter, Romang Tumbaga Peake.
The celebratory buffet included special dishes prepared by Paul and Becky Sialana (pork/peas/pimiento), Myrna Tumbaga (pansit) and Julie’s famous BBQ ribs. “Onolicious” desserts included cancanen, cascaron, and kulolo with the birthday cake. It was truly a celebration of life to remember, all in attendance agreed.
