One of the Kaua‘i Police Department’s most wanted was arraigned yesterday morning after spending the weekend in jail.
Police arrested Byron Say at 3:25 p.m. Friday at a Kilauea residence after receiving an anonymous tip. Say is being held without bail.
Officers with the Narcotics Enforcement Unit responded to the tip and located Say in Hanalei. They then followed him to Kilauea.
After attempting to flee on foot, Say was arrested in the driveway of a Kilauea residence. KPD patrol officers assisted with the arrest.
Police escalated their search for Say in January, after he continued to elude police.
Say, who was wanted for several offenses, was spotted on a moped at 10:30 p.m. Jan. 2 by police on Weke Road near Black Pot Beach Park. He managed to get away from officers on foot after ditching his moped.
Say allegedly crashed a rental car into a motorcycle in Hanalei in June 2005, ran over the passenger, then fled the scene. He wasn’t criminally charged in the incident. The motorcyclist was Steve Wheeler. His passenger, Lisa Wilson, suffered serious injuries in the accident. She has filed a civil suit against Say.
Say is charged with methamphetamine trafficking, first-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, two counts of second-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, two counts of prohibited acts related to drug paraphernalia, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, tampering with physical evidence and three counts of criminal contempt of court.
Say is scheduled to appear at 8:30 a.m. on March 12, in District Court.
