Matt Ross to compete in HHSAA finals
HONOLULU — Matt Ross, a junior at Kaua‘i High School, was the only Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation to make the finals over the weekend.
Ross finished the finals of the Boys 500 yard freestyle in eighth place in a field of eight swimmers in the finals that ran Saturday at the HHSAA/Local Motion Swimming and Diving Hawai‘i State Championships.
Earlier in the KIF season, Ross qualified for the state meet on a 5:23.22 swim.
On Friday, Ross shaved almost 15 seconds off his qualifying time for a 5:08.13 that pushed him into the finals of that event.
Saturday, Ross stopped the clock at 5:09.04, a tad slower than his Friday swim, but still well below his entry time.
Acting Kaua‘i High School athletic director Cynthia Matsuoka, who accompanied the swimmers to the state meet, said this was an amazing feat, considering how much time he cut from his qualifying time.
“This is quite an accomplishment,” said coach Ro Davis, who was the meet director during the KIF swim meets here. “No other swimmer from Kaua‘i placed in any other event.”
Island School sweeps Kula in Tennis
Island School swept its KIF tennis series against Kula Saturday, taking the boys matches 5-0 and edging out the girls matches 3-2.
No. 1 singles Justin Vea won by default and No. 2 Ashton Perez defeated Marcus Rose 6-1, 6-1.
On the doubles court, Justin Pelton and Noah Randolph-Flagg handled Andrew Chase and Kyle Sherrer 6-0, 6-0 in No. 1 play.
Eric Talvi teamed with Ryan Bender to beat Nick Giarman and Rebop Rundgren 6-1, 6-0 on the No. 2 courts and Manas Kirshagar and Hunter Coberly took the No. 3 match by default.
Kula girls won in singles but lost the doubles for the 3-2 final.
Danielle Hoen got past Jasmine Blaine 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 on the No. 1 court while Danielle Jure defeated Dianna Cowern 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in No. 2 play.
Tayler Dabin and Juli Blachowiak teamed up to down Ellie Sherrer and Emily Rider 6-0, 6-3 in No. 1 doubles while Jessica Duarte and Niki Arruda defeated Kriste Steiner and Summer Ryli 6-3, 7-5 on the No. 2 court.
Tayler James and Isabelle Worley defeated Gallia Pickett and Angelei 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) on the No. 3 courts.
Island School will match up against Kapa‘a at the Kiahuna Tennis Courts Saturday while Kula makes the trip out to Hanapepe for a match against Waimea at noon.
