ACLU Hawai‘i is looking for the next generation of “civil libertarians,” and the deadline to nominate is March 23.
Winners of the Guardians of Liberty & Justice Youth Award will be honored May 26 at the state Supreme Court.
Students through high school engaged in work that confronts a constitutional or civil liberties issue can be nominated, according to an ACLU-Hawai‘i release.
Past nominees have worked to defend freedom of speech, the right to protest or have fought against discrimination. Award recipients include several public school students who overcame opposition by school officials to the formation of a Gay-Straight Alliance school club.
Nominations can be made by anyone — teachers, counselors, legislators, community groups or individuals. Self-nominations are also accepted.
There is a $1,000 first place award, and up to two $500 second place awards.
“This award provides needed recognition to inspire and encourage these young civil libertarians who may have experienced opposition in advancing their cause,” ACLU of Hawai‘i Executive Director Vanessa Chong said in the release.
The nomination form is available by contacting ACLU-Hawai‘i at office@acluhawaii.org, (808) 522-5900 or (808) 522-5909 (fax).
