Which game do you go to?

I’m told that this island is, at times, one big happy family. Everyone wants to go to the games to support their kids, grand-kids, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. But between Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation and community games going on everywhere, like yesterday, which game do you go to?

In Kapa‘a, there was the high school baseball double header, starting at 10 a.m. At the Kauai Lagoons Golf Course in Lihu‘e was the golf match at 11:30 a.m.

Then there were two tennis matches going on at noon, when Waimea High School met Kapa‘a at the Hanapepe Courts, while Kaua‘i High School faced Kula School at the Kiahuna Courts.

Then, of course, there was the Mayor’s Invitational track and field meet at the Vidinha Stadium at around 2 p.m.

Not to mention other sporting events going on in the community. There was the Texas Hold’em poker tournament and the Kauai Collegiate Cup golf tournament and Kaua‘i Soccer Association action going on.

For me, I have to figure out where to go, and it’s not a matter of who gets coverage, because we get the results, but I can only imagine how the parents and family members choose which game to go to.

What’s funny is that girls basketball is going to start up soon. So that’s another game to throw in the mix.

Maybe someone can fill me in on how this time clash happened.

You can start at one game, ditch out to go to another, then truck on over to another, but you still wouldn’t be able to see one game in its entirety.

When I have kids, I want to be able to make all of their games and not have to choose between games.

I know on the Mainland where there are 10 or more schools per district, and they have games going on, it’s not a big deal. But, as the saying goes, “this is not the Mainland.”

I spoke to some parents and coaches this past weekend who said they’re aware of this problem and that it happens on occasion. They just kind of shrugged because there isn’t anything they can do about it.

This was the first time I had a real problem with it just because it was inconvenient.

But how can we fix this?

Why not have some teams play on Thursdays or something, or just not have the games start so closely together. Maybe some in the morning, then others in the afternoon.

I’m not a member of the KIF, nor do I have any kids, so maybe I have no right to complain. It just seems unfortunate that some people can’t go to all the games they want to.

It’s bad enough, start times change so often. Remember the girls varsity basketball game on March 30 has been pushed up for OC 16 game coverage. Also, times change on testing days, but that’s a good thing.

Oh well, I guess the games clashing is just something we have to accept for now until a solution surfaces. It’s just there are people who complain that there is no support for the athletes.

But maybe if there weren’t so many games going on at once, people could actually attend them.
