Loomis-ISC announced the appointment of Gary Hooser as the agency’s new vice president, public affairs, states a press release. Hooser has an extensive background in business and public service.
He is a graduate of the University of Hawai‘i with a degree in public administration and has significant governmental experience beginning with his service on the Kaua‘i County Council and subsequently as a state Senator, District 7, Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau.
He also serves as the Majority Leader of the State Senate. Hooser will serve as vice president, public affairs for Loomis-ISC between May and December when the legislature is not in session.
The newly created position and the fact that it is being filled by someone with a strong familiarity with business and public affairs issues both in Honolulu and on the Neighbor Islands will significantly enhance the agency’s ability to address matters of community importance throughout the state, the release states.
Hooser has run real estate and publishing businesses on Kaua‘i. He has also been recognized for his leadership on issues relating to environmental affairs and for championing community-based sustainable development.
The announcement was made by Loomis-ISC chairman, Austen Zecha. Zecha said, in the release, “We were proud to represent Gary Hooser in his campaign as a candidate for Congress last year. To have a man of his known caliber and integrity now representing Loomis-ISC speaks well for the agency’s ethos and promises a new dimension of service for its clients.”
“This agency has always had energy and talent,” said Dawn Morais Webster, president and CEO, in the release. “We have re-oriented that energy and think of ourselves today in terms of who we need to be to serve the kind of clients we have and wish to attract,” she added.
BBB announces finalists for
13th annual Business Ethics Torch Awards
The Better Business Bureau of Hawai‘i, the leader in promoting and monitoring ethical business practices, has announced the finalists of its 2007 Torch Awards for Business Ethics.
“These finalists exemplify exceedingly high ethical standards and a willingness to ensure Hawai‘i’s marketplace remains fair to those living in and visiting the islands,” said Fred Badua, chairman of the BBB board, in a press release. “They promote ethical business conduct through voluntary self-regulation and adhere to a strict standard of ethics,” added Dwight Kealoha, CEO of the BBB.
The finalists are:
• Business Individual: Dr. Cecile Sebastian
• Small Business (99 or fewer employees): Graham Builders, DTRIC Insurance, and Laser Eye Center of Hawai‘i
• Large Business (100 or more employees): Jamba Juice, Outrigger Enterprises, and First Insurance
• Small Non-Profit (99 or fewer employees): Special Olympics Hawaii, Honolulu Board of Realtors, and Adults Friends for Youth
• Large Non-Profit (100 or more employees): Aloha United Way, Mental Health Kokua, and Easter Seals
Winners will be recognized at the 2007 BBB Torch Awards for Business Ethics luncheon on April 18 at the Hawaii Prince Hotel in Honolulu.
Last year’s BBB Hawaii Torch Award winners were Enterprise Rent-A-Car of Hawai‘i, Environmental Waste Management Systems, Inc., Catholic Charities Hawai‘i, Hawaii Theatre Center, and Rusty Gage of Valley Isle Gymnastics, Maui.

Kenneth Newman, vice president of security at American Savings Bank, will present a timely overview of fraud and identity theft threats as well as preventative measures at the Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce 1st Quarter General Membership Meeting Thursday at the Princeville Hotel.
Some of the highlights include: the challenges of protecting individuals and businesses; the online and offline risks to assets and information; a look at the problems as reported by various media outlets; and possible solutions to limit the scope and impact of an incident.
Ken leads the Security Department at American Savings Bank, where he oversees the areas of information security, business continuity, and physical security.
He has 13 years of security experience in financial services.
Prior to joining American Savings Bank, Ken was with Deutsche Bank in New York for seven years where he held a variety of positions, most recently as global head of infrastructure security assurance.
Ken holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Columbia University and is pursuing a master’s degree in information systems from Hawaii Pacific University.
He also holds certifications in information security, project management, and IT management. Ken is a member of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association and enjoys speaking at technical conferences nationwide.
