Travis Toguchi may have shot the best at 1-under par 71 Saturday at the Wailua Golf Course, but it wasn’t enough to give Kapa‘a High School the win it needed to force a golf-off with season leader Kaua‘i High School.
Kaua‘i won by six strokes to take the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation Championship.
As a team, Kaua‘i shot 295 to Kapa‘a’s 301.
“It’s really tight,” said Kaua‘i’s head coach Ipo Yoshioka. “I told them to go out there and remember why they’re here.”
Kaua‘i’s Cory Oride (35-37) and Levi Miyashiro (36-36) shot even par at 72. Nikko Tacsiat shot 3-over at 75 (37-38). Wiley Yoskioka shot 76 (37-39), while Jordan Cox finished at 77 (38-39).
The third and 12th hole were the toughest for Cox.
“I double bogeyed on them,” he said.
Following Toguchi, Jet Levinthol finished 2-over at 74 (39-35). Maika‘i Laureta went 4-over with a 76 (37-39).
But after that, the next closest Warrior, Bronzen Winters, was at 80 (38-42).
Waimea’s Noel Torres shot the best for his team with a 76 (38-38). Kula School’s Cyrus Ogawa shot a 77 (38-39) as an individualist.
For the girls, Kapa‘a’s Gabrielle Saiki and Kaua‘i’s Miki Ueoka tied at 2-over with a 74.
Leslyn Ibara carded the best score for Waimea at 100 (42-48), her group also made up of Hamiha and Kolonohe Arquette and Chisato Umetsu.
“I had trouble with my putting early on,” Ueoka said. “But I got back to the game later.”
With the win, Kaua‘i High School gets to send its five top golfers to the HHSAA State Golf Championship scheduled for May 8-9 for the girls and May 15-16 for the boys.
Individualists have two matches to qualify, the first coming this Saturday at the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course starting at 11:40 a.m.
