‘Jean Anne’ goes ‘green’
Pasha Hawaii Transport Lines announced the completion of major retrofitting of the company flagship “Jean Anne” in response to new environmental regulations in California requiring the burning of low-sulfur fuel within 24 miles of the coast. Marine diesel oil is a lighter and cleaner fuel and will support the Jean Anne’s propulsion system via two hundred meters of new piping. The retrofitting was accomplished with no downtime or impact to the vessel’s sailing schedule between California and Hawai‘i. Additional environmentally friendly upgrades to the Jean Anne’s engine include installation of slide valves in each of the cylinders of the main engine, which will result in cleaner combustion and reduced emissions at all times n a benefit to Hawai‘i as the vessel travels between islands. The slide valves also contribute to the efficiency of the engine and lengthen the time between required servicing.
“We are keenly aware of our responsibility to protect the environment,” said George Pasha, III, in a press release, “and are pleased to be able to invest in environmentally friendly technology.”
Lihu‘e Business Association Breakfast Forum
The Lihu‘e Business Association presents the second of its 2007 forums, “Thought for Food” at 7:30 a.m. Thursday at Duke’s Canoe Club, Kalapaki Bay. Duke’s offers a continental breakfast at the free forum to discuss the importance of the food system, from the growers’ and distributors’ to restaurateurs’ perspectives in addition to related industries such as transportation. Kaua‘i’s geographical isolation has a significant bearing on how food is an integral part of the islands’ industry and of its importance and impact to its economy. The food system is an important component in planning, from agricultural land use to shipping and transport, warehousing and retail commercial restaurant activities. It’s also critical to public health, both to end hunger and to deal with waste. Speakers will include: Laverne Grady of Kaua‘i Grower’s Exchange; Peter Yukimura of Koa Trading Company; Mark Oyama of Kaua‘i Community College and Marks Place/Contemporary Flavors. LBA’s role in the Lihu‘e District is to enhance regional business objectives; provide a mechanism for networking; play an active role in “master planning”; assist in evolving community development and provide a voice to county, state and federal government. Jim Cummings earns
System Manager of the Year award
Jim Cummings, property systems manager at the Kauai Marriott Resort & Beach Club, has just been awarded the System Manager of the Year 2006 Asia Pacific by Marriott International.
Cummings began his path to success as an automotive line technician for 14 years before moving to Kaua‘i. He was appointed as an engineer at the Kauai Marriott Resort & Beach Club in 1997 and assisted the resort’s information systems department in his free time. His passionate involvement led to his promotion as the resort’s information systems manager in 2002.
In addition to handling the resort’s system, his expertise was much sought by other Marriott properties in Hawai‘i including the newly renovated Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa as well as Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa. Jim also assisted with tele-communications work at Marriott’s Ko Olina Beach Club which led to a yearly savings of $12,000 at the property. Last year, he attended the systems managers’ seminar organized by Marriott International in Beijing.
Cummings is always on-call due to the nature of his job. Cummings is considered instrumental in ensuring a smooth operational process day and night at the resort.
Open clinic day planned at
West Kaua‘i Medical Center
The Occupational Therapy Department at West Kaua‘i Medical Center is having a Community Awareness Day, Friday where Steven Kline OTR/CEAS, the director of occupational therapy, will open his clinic to show and operate various types of adaptive equipment and how they are used for various diagnosis. “I will also be showing off my newest assisting technology program — Brain Train — used for head injury, stroke and spinal cord patients,” Kline said in a press release. “It has four modules (cognitive training programs) which allow you to printout before and after results.” The technology is also being used for long-term care residents. Kline hopes to work with the staff at Mahelona Hospital to incorporate the technology there as well. For more information, call 338-9452.
