KAPA‘A — A pair of free throws by Leina‘ala McCabe with 13 seconds showing on the clock put the game out of reach for Waimea.
“We were down by 10 points at one point, but the girls came back,” said Waimea JV coach Bobby Kamakele following their 42-37 loss Tuesday night.
“I told them if they were open, to take the three-point shot,” he said.
A Kori Sakamoto bucket with less than a minute pulled Waimea within striking distance, 37-40. But with 39 ticks remaining, Joanna Andres, one of the Waimea guards, pulled her fifth foul, leaving the JV Menehune with one less shooter capable of the treys. McCabe put the game out of reach from that point.
Tori Tuttle, who sparked Kapa‘a with 8 of its 15 first quarter points, finished with game-high 16 points followed by Kira Nakamura, notching 4 in Kapa‘a’s 13-5 opening quarter, adding 13 points. McCabe finished with 7 points, Shalyn Tupou added 5 points and digits from Ash-lyn Lee and Mele Yama rounded out the win.
Sakamoto topped the JV Menehune scoring with 10 points followed by Kathleen Singson adding 7 points, including 6 in the fourth quarter when Waimea finished 11-11 with Kapa‘a. Sera Pascual and Brandi Briones each added 5 points and Arlene Valmoja rounded out the math with 4 points.
Waimea will host Kaua‘i High School Friday night starting at 5:30 p.m.
