NAWILIWILI — Members of the West Kaua‘i Youth Golf Club were pleasantly surprised when they showed up for weekly practice at the Kaua‘i Lagoons driving range Sunday.
Richard Kuga, their coach, presented each of the aspiring golfers with a cap autographed by Tadd Fujikawa, the Moanalua High School student who was in the golf spotlight recently.
Kuga said he got the caps while on a trip to Honolulu after he met Fujikawa in a Chinese restaurant in Salt Lake.
Kuga’s companion was classmates with Fujikawa’s relative and the young O‘ahu golfer was willing to do the favor for his aspiring Kaua‘i counterparts.
The WKYCG is entering its third or fourth year and Kuga said he is appreciative of Kaua‘i Lagoons allowing the WKYCG players to practice on the facility.
“The parents just have to be willing to drive them down here,” he said.
On the agenda for Sunday, the boys were scheduled to sweep through the hedgeline along the driving range to extract balls so the golf course staff could harvest them.
That was followed by a round of chipping exercises before hitting the driving range, Kuga said.
Kuga said in addition to the Kaua‘i Lagoons time, the young players meet each Monday in the park on Menehune Road in Waimea where they also get in some practice time with the Waimea High School golf teams.
