William Joseph “Helicopter Joe” Sulak
William Joseph (Joe) Sulak, of Folsom, Calif., was killed in a helicopter accident on March 8, 2007, at Princeville Airport on Kaua‘i at the age of 59.
Born Feb. 9, 1948, in Waco, Texas, Joe began flying helicopters at age 19 for the U.S. Army 101ST Airborn Division. A Vietnam veteran, he saved countless lives as a medivac and was a part of the infamous battle at “Hamburger Hill.”
Joe had a deep passion for flying which led him around the world. He flew helicopters in the Middle East and Machu Picchu.
In 1978, Joe joined the first ever “Life Flight” air-ambulance program in Houston, Texas. This program was cutting edge and changed EMT response times dramatically thus saving more lives.
Joe dedicated decades to this career which took him to various hospitals all over the states. He eventually moved to Folsom which he considered to be his home. While not flying Lifeflight for UC Davis Med Center, Joe enjoyed spending quality time with his friends and family and especially enjoyed dredging/mining for gold. He cherished his moments with nature.
In 2003, Joe began flying tours on Kaua‘i. He took great pleasure in entertaining his passengers while sharing his knowledge and love of the island along with a few of his life’s adventures. It was here that he became known as “Helicopter Joe” and it was here, tragically, that his adventures came to an end.
Joe is preceded in death by his mother, Billie Jo King, and his father, Sylvester Sulak. Sadly, he was joined just one week after his passing by his younger sister Susan Sulak.
Joe is survived by his son, Andrew Sulak, his daughter, Carrie Sulak and their mother, Melinda Wilson. He also leaves behind a 6 month old granddaughter, Avaleigh. His sister, Sylvia Puffer and her husband Duane, his niece Chanda Young and her children Ashton and Landon, his niece Heather Reed, her husband Scott and their daughter Lauren, his niece Holly Duckworth, her husband Daniel and their son Will. There are countless cousins and an abundance of friends.
Joe wished to be remembered any time Van Morrison’s “Call me up in Dreamland” is played. In his own words, “Its a classic!”
