BELLS BEACH, Aus.— Kaua‘i’s Tyler Newton, 16, won the boys division of the Rip Curl GromSearch International Championship surfing contest Saturday.
In front of a huge crowd at Bells Beach, Australia, the worlds best 16 year and under surfers who have qualified through their own regions from across the surfing world put on an incredible show of progressive and radical surfing the 3-feet surf at Rincon Point.
Newton found plenty of air time scoring 9.5, mid-heat. With five minutes left of the heat, Newton scored an 8.5 to take the lead.
“What an amazing final, toughest I’ve surfed by far and we were all just pushing each other to score bigger and bigger,” he said after he won. “I’ve had a great time here and it’s so good to win an event like this. It’s the best feeling.”
Newton is the second surfer from Kaua‘i to win a GromSearch International competition. Alana Blanchard captured the girls title last year.
Kaua‘i’s Alex Smith also competed and finished fourth.
