Casey Watabu’s plan to par on every hole in Round 1 of the Masters Tournament didn’t exactly go too well.
He shot15-over 72 to finish in last place yesterday. He came up short on many of the holes, shooting only one birdie, on the eighth hole.
Perhaps it was the chilly, 50-degree, windy weather that got to him.
But Watabu’s biggest trouble came when he hit his ball into the water on the 11th hole.
Maybe he was flustered because he hit into the water three more times after that — twice on the 12th and then again on the 16th.
He wasn’t the only one to struggle yesterday. Neither Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson, Mike Weir or Geoff Ogilvy shot well.
Woods, who is trying for his fifth green jacket, is tied with Singh at 1-over at 73.
Kane‘ohe’s Dean Wilson fared decently at 3-over, tying with Weir and Ogilvy at 75. Tom Watson, who is paired with Watabu, is also at 75.
Mickelson shot 4-over with a 76.
Fred Funk, also in Watabu’s group, shot 10-over at 82.
Mastercard event winner Justin Rose, who makes his third Masters appearance and Masters newbie Brett Wetterich, are tied at first place with 3-under at 69.
Watabu teed off today with Watson and Funk at around 12:35 p.m.
