WAIMEA — After being held to just 3 points in the third period, the Junior Menehune exploded for a 17-11 final period to mark their first win 39-34 Friday night.
“We finally broke through,” Waimea coach Bobby Kamakele said following their win. “We’re not zero anymore.”
Waimea lost little time asserting themselves, outscoring the Raiders 9-5 in the opening quarter bheind Kori Sakamoto who piled up 7 points en route to finishing with a game-high 18 points.
Sakamoto continued to blaze in the second period as Kaua‘i still came up short 10-9 for a 19-14 Waimea lead at the half.
Joanna Andres paced the Junior Menehune with all 10 of her game total coming in the second half, 8 in the final period.
Arlene Valmoja came alive in the fourth period to notch her game-total 5 points and Sera Pascual rounded out the Menehune scoring leaders with 8 points, 3 coming in the fourth quarter.
Jori-Anne Jasper topped the Kaua‘i JV scoring with 9 points, 8 coming in the second half.
She paced the Raiders’ third quarter comeback effort with 4 of their 9-3 point run in the frame.
Rachel Hamamura follwed with 6 second-half points along with Randee Layosa. Kanani Dreier added 5 points followed by Alyssa Carvalho and Christina Banach each finishing with 4 points. A trio from Jaime Mariano rounded out the books.
The loss breaks Kaua‘i’s string of three straight wins and sets the stage for the Raiders’ meeting against Kapa‘a Tuesday evening.
That game begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Raiderdome.
