A Kauaian family was left without a home after a fire destroyed theirs in Anahola on March 28.
The family has nothing left but the clothes on their backs.
They are eager to put what’s gone behind them and move on to a new future.
Evangeline Hoopii, (Angie) the mother, drives the Seventh Day Kahili Adventist School bus and performs many tasks there.
Loved and appreciated deeply for their aloha spirit and big heart by the whole community, the Hoopii family regularly takes into their home children and teens in need of direction and support.
The family is calling out for any help the community, local businesses or organizations can offer while they restart.
There is a donation drop off at the storage space of a member of the Kapaa Seventh Day Adventist Church at 6979 Kawaihau Road in Kapa‘a. Call Joyce Kehoe for details at 828-1324 or e-mail joycekehoe24@yahoo.com for an update of their needs.
There is also an account for direct contributions at the First Hawaiian Bank under the name of “Friends of Evangeline Hoopii.” Contributions are tax-deductible.

The Red Cross, Resort Quest in Kapa‘a, Aloha Resort in Kapa‘a, the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort and Beach Club and other local hotels have provided the Hoopii’s a place to stay for the Easter weekend through April 11.
The Kapa‘a Marriott has also offered to organize a clothing drive at the hotel once the family is settled in a home.
They are in need of long-term housing from Anahola to Kapa‘a to get back on their feet while rebuilding home and lives.

Damages to the 1,200-square-foot wooden home and its contents are estimated at $220,000.
Twelve firefighters and rescue specialists from the Kapa‘a and Lihu‘e stations responded to the late March fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
