Four Hawai‘i bowlers make up the field of 16 that emerged following eight games on the opening day of the PBA West/Northwest Region Rice Shopping Center Open yesterday.
Robert Smith of Captain Cook was obviously frustrated with the string of spares he picked up in Game 5 of the opening day.
Smith was ranked fourth following the first four games, rolling an 823 pinfall.
The second four games took its toll on Smith as he finished in eighth place with a 1563 pinfall, but advancing to the final round that starts this morning at the Lihu‘e Bowling Center.
The final day features the top 16 bowlers from the 54-bowler field.
Smith leads the field of Hawai‘i bowlers that include Craig Yamada of Kaneohe (9th-1,559), Keith Odette of Waipahu (10th-1,553) and Joseph Yockman of Kapolei (12th-1,546).
Corey Husted of Clackamas, Ore., leads the field with a 1,649 pinfall, the Oregonian losing little time establishing his mastery over the “Chameleon” lane condition at the LBC.
Following four games, Husted was already at the top position with an 840 pinfall.
Mason Sherman of Moorpark, Calif., was just seven pins back after four games, but by day’s end, Sherman (1,541) slipped to 13th, replaced by Jason Hoppe (1,617) of Sierra Madre, Calif., in second place. This was an improvement over Hoppe’s fifth rank following four games.
Darryl Izumo led the field of four Kaua‘i bowlers in the tournament.
Following four games, Izumo was ranked 13th with a 786 pinfall, but slipped to 25th with 1,485 pins at day’s end.
Bernard Almarza of Kapa‘a followed at 35th with 1,382 pins. John Petrovits (38th-1,339) and Kevin Tennberg (44th-1,266) represented Kaua‘i.
Missy Bellinder of Fullerton, Calif., opened game five with an open frame, picking up just one pin on a three-pin split.
But she followed that with a spare and two straight strikes followed by another spare.
That performance moved her from the 11th rank
following four games to fifth after eight games with a 1,578 pinfall. Bellinder and Nicole Ellison of Chatsworth, Calif., were the two female bowlers in the tournament, Ellison finishing 30th after eight games at 1,443.
Tony Reyes (1,531) of San Bruno, Calif., was the final bowler to advance to the finals, securing the 16th position by a pin over Marv Sargent (1,530) of Temecula, Calif.
Dave Wodka of Las Vegas followed in 18th place, a pin back of Sargent.
