LIHU‘E — A fifth-grader from Kilauea Elementary School has been selected as the Kauai grand prize winner in the 8th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Poetry Contest. Amber Diaz received the grand prize for her winning poem entitled “A Dream,” about her vision for peace.
Some 248 Kaua‘i students participated in the countywide competition organized by the International Peace Poem Project, a non-governmental organization of volunteers, including teachers and artists. The competition pays homage to Dr. King, the civil rights leader who promoted nonviolent means to achieve social change.
Diaz and other Kaua‘i winners are to receive certificates from state Sen. Gary Hooser.
The grand prize, a watercolor painting by Maui artist Liz Singer, was presented to Diaz by Councilwoman JoAnn Yukimura during a ceremony at Kilauea Elementary.
The International Peace Poem Project has sponsored Dr. King poetry competitions in the four counties of the state for the past eight years.
Project organizers participated in Millennium Peace Day at the United Nations in New York in 2000. More information about the Project may be obtained by accessing the Project’s Web site at peacepoem.org.
