A Lawa‘i residence was completely gutted yesterday after an early-morning fire caused roughly $200,000 worth of damage.
No one was injured in the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The blaze started in a bedroom on the upper level of the duplex at around 5 a.m. and was deemed under control at 5:30 a.m., Mary Daubert, county spokeswoman, said.
A passer-by reportedly spotted the flames and called 911 to report the house was on fire.
The two residents were able to flee and said that within minutes the two-bedroom wooden house was engulfed in flames. They were unable to save any of their belongings. No one was in the studio apartment on the bottom level of the duplex.
Dispatch got the call around 5:14 a.m., Daubert said, and firefighters were on-scene at 5:23 a.m. Kalahaeo firefighters arrived first, and responders from Koloa and Lihu‘e stations followed shortly thereafter, she said.
