Kukui Grove to host free job fair
Job seekers and employers alike can make connections at the Kaua‘i Job Service Employer Committee’s sixth annual Kauai Job Fair May 12.
The free event, which will take place at the Kukui Grove Shopping Center from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., is geared toward just about anyone looking for work or a career change, including college students, high school graduates and retirees.
Local management teams from more than 60 businesses in the visitor, retail, agricultural, educational, military, nonprofit, health and technical fields will attend.
Resumé-writing assistance will be offered as well as tips for applying online with HireNet, WorkWise’s Internet-based job list. Computers will be available for online applications.
The event is presented by Kaua‘i Job Service Employer Committee and sponsored by the Kaua‘i Workforce Investment Board.
Superferry to offer discounts to kids,
senior citizens and retired military
Hawai‘i Superferry, which will launch in July, announced it will offer a connecting fare for travel between Maui and Kaua‘i via Honolulu. It will also provide discounted rates for children 12 and under, passengers 62 and older and retired military personnel, including the Coast Guard.
“As we continue preparations for our launch in July, the excitement has been building and we’ve received many inquiries about the availability of discounted fares,” Hawai‘i Superferry President and Chief Executive Officer John Garibaldi stated in a press release.
One-way fares for children 2 to 12, seniors and retired military will be $41 for off-peak travel and $51 for peak travel, not including a fuel surcharge. The fares mark an $11 discount from regular adult rates. One-way fare for children under 2 years old will cost $17 on any day of travel.
Lower fares will be available with advanced purchase from the company’s Web site. Discounts for passenger and non-commercial vehicle travel between Maui and Kaua‘i via Honolulu will be available at 50 percent of the published rates for the second travel segment on consecutive voyages.
Hawai‘i Superferry’s first vessel was recently christened with the name Ala Kai, or “ocean path” in Hawaiian, in honor of Hawai‘i’s rich history of navigation and marine travel, according to a press release.
Tickets are scheduled to go on sale in late May. A second ferry is expected to arrive in 2009 to provide service between the Big Island and O‘ahu and a second daily route between O‘ahu and Maui.
Hawaiian Telecom rewards Kaua‘i schools
for recycling old phone books
Ten Kaua‘i schools participated in Hawaiian Telcom’s telephone book recycling contest on-island, collectively recycling 41,359 pounds of books, or the weight of four male elephants, the company announced in a press release.
The event, which ran from Feb. 12 to March 23, challenged students to collect outdated books from their homes and the community.
“This contest allows us to safeguard our island environment and help our students understand the importance of recycling,” said Ron Montgomery, Hawaiian Telcom Directories vice president and general manager, in a press release. “It encourages them to become involved with environmental concerns and protects our landfills from overflowing.”
Among the top three participants were Wilcox Elementary School with 5,894 pounds recycled, Kapa‘a Elementary with 4,802 pounds and Koloa Elementary with 3,896 pounds. The schools received cash prizes of $700, $500 and $200, respectively, for their efforts.
Other winners of $100 prizes included King Kaumuali‘i Elementary, Kapa‘a Middle and Kalaheo Elementary, all with more than 3,000 pounds; St. Catherine with almost 2,900; and Kekaha Elementary with about 1,700 pounds.
Scholarships available for Kaua‘i students
Applications are now open for scholarships from two business organizations.
The Kaua‘i Filipino Chamber of Commerce is offering three $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors of Filipino ancestry. Scholarship applications and other requirements are available at the school counselor’s office of Kapa‘a, Waimea and Kaua‘i high schools. The application deadline is May 18. High school seniors interested in pursuing a science degree are invited to apply for the Monsanto Hawai‘i Life Sciences scholarship, which has been expanded statewide to 10 scholarships of $1,000 each. The educational grants are designed to help students further their education in the sciences.
The scholarships are open to students of all public and private high schools in Hawai‘i who will be graduating in good standing this year and will be attending an accredited college or university to pursue a post-secondary education in a discipline related to the life sciences.
