Officer James Miller said in a release that the police department plans to stage checkpoints at various locations around the island, and will be checking for those who are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs as well as other traffic violations.
“Compared to last year, traffic fatalities are down,” Miller said. “There were seven in the first five months of 2006, and so far this year, there have been three.”
Millersaid he hopes that the checkpoints will help keep drunk drivers and those high on drugs off the streets.
