Applications are now being accepted for the Future Flight Hawai‘i mission to the Blue Planet, being held on June 18 to June 22, at Kaua‘i Community College for students in grades three through six. Designed to teach science through problem-solving and hands-on learning, each year the program develops a situational challenge in which the kids use cognitive and problem-solving skills.
“This summer the students are aliens from their dying planet ‘Yogeva.’ They come to the Blue Planet to search for a new home. We Earthlings show them the diversity of our planet — the air, the water, the soil, and what technology can do for them,” explained Kaua‘i coordinator Cheryl Shintani.
Training modules will begin at 8 a.m., and end at noon each day. Friday’s graduation ceremony held in the KCC dining room is open to the families, friends, and community partners.
With the limited space for the popular summer program, parents are urged to enroll their child(ren) as soon as possible. Tuition of $175 includes science supplies, a Future Flight Hawai‘i t-shirt, a crew identification lanyard, and a mission log.
“It was an amazing week being able to join in at Future Flight. What an awesome program — our daughter said that it was the first time she felt like a real scientist.” explains a 2006 parent.
Enrollment forms and more information can be found at school offices on Kaua‘i or downloaded from the Web site www.higp.hawaii.edu/futureflight.
