The Navy League of the United States, Kaua‘i Council, awarded its yearly scholarships at a recent presentation. This year $2,500 was given for two essays. The first place award of $1,500 went to Brooke Tagupa of Kaua‘i High School. Second place award of $1,000 went to Kelli Okamoto of Kapa‘a High School.
The subject matter of the yearly essays is often daunting but the students who participate and win do a fine job in their research and writing. This year’s essay was entitled “Wings of Gold, Naval Aviation in the 21st Century.”
Those who judge the essays often learn a great deal about naval subjects through the research of the young essayists.
Brooke and Kelli were joined by their families for the presentation event. Brooke shared the day with her mother and father, Leona and Sixto Tagupa and her grandmother, Marcela Maximo. Kelli was with mother and father, Nellie and Charlie Okamoto.
Sandy Gage, scholarship chairman, presented the scholarships at a luncheon at Kaua‘i Community College prepared by the Culinary Department at KCC.
