Seven nursing students recently completed the state- approved nurse aide training program conducted by the American Red Cross.
As state certified nurse assistants, Gracelyn Dumlao, Whitney Wong, Petra Oune,
Froilynn Panday, Rebecca Niheu-Yong, Elpidio Peralta Jr. and Mary Agrade all participated in the rigorous, seven-week course.
Among the program requirements are 91 hours of lecture and lab practice and 39 hours of hands-on clinical experience at a local long-term care facility.
Classes are instructed by Linda Neuman and held in the evenings three nights a week to accommodate participants who work or go to school during the day.
During training, students are taught 40 hands-on nursing skills in the classroom lab sessions and are then able to apply the skills in a clinical setting under Neuman’s supervision.
Upon completion of the course, students are qualified to take the Hawai‘i Nurse Assistant Competency Evaluation.
A limited number of partial scholarships are available to qualifying applicants.
The scholarships are made possible through private grants awarded to the American Red Cross’ Hawai‘i chapter. Wong was this session’s scholarship recipient.
The course is available on Kaua‘i roughly every two and a half months, with the next session beginning May 29.
