HANAPEPE — A walk to Travis Koga came back to bite the Hanapepe Cubs Sunday as the Lihu‘e catcher went on to score and Lihu‘e took a 5-3 win out of Hanapepe Stadium.
Taren Tani led the way for the Lihu‘e Pony Baseball team with three scores, including one in the fifth inning that came off a Hanapepe Cub passed ball.
He also helped in the win by closing for starting pitcher Trey Shimabukuro.
Shimabukuro also was credited with one run in the sixth inning.
The Cubs answered Tani’s score in the bottom of the frame when Clifton Callejo crossed on a Dallas Correa RBI shot for the 1-1 tie.
Vinda Carineo drove Correa home for the 2-1 bulge.
In the fourth frame, the Cubs went up by another digit when Nikko Delos Reyes scored on a fielder’s choice off Mana Perreira-Alquiza’s hit that nailed Correa at second base.
At that point, Lihu‘e went to work, scoring Tani in the fifth, and Shimabukuro’s courtesy runner in the sixth for the 3-3 tie.
Two more runs in the seventh gave Lihu‘e the win, preserving its single-loss standing.
For Hanapepe, the loss is the Cubs’ third after dropping two prior encounters to the Waimea Blue Jays.
