North Shore girls Leila Hurst and Alana Blanchard are two of the girls picked to represent Hawai‘i in the 2007 Quiksilver ISA World Jr. Surfing Championships held this weekend in Costa de Caparica, Portugal.
Dylan Goodale, also from Kaua‘i, will be surfing in the boys division.
Thirty-one national delegations have confirmed that they will be taking part in the competition, a record that has raised expectations even higher this year.
Taking advantage of the concept of the Olympic games, Hawai‘i is taking 12 of our best junior surfers to compete in this event.
The countries taking part are: Portugal, New Zealand, U.S., Japan, France, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Jamaica, Switzerland, Brazil, Chile, Canada, Barbados, South Africa, Ireland, Hawai‘i, Venezuela, Australia, England, Italy, Guatemala, Spain, Israel, Peru, Germany, Costa Rica, Somalia, Morocco, Argentina, Ecuador and Tahiti.
Last year the competition was held in Brazil where Hawai‘i placed third.
In 2005 Hawai‘i won the event. The team from Hawai‘i hopes to reclaim the coveted first place trophy again this year.
