KIF athletes did well at the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association meet that ended with championships Saturday, said Baptiste.
“Chelsea Smith-Wishard of Kaua‘i High School finished first in the 1500 meter run, Kaua‘i High School girls team finished in fifth place,” Baptiste said. “Chris Newcomb from Waimea was second in the boys high jump, and Loke Manaku from Kapa‘a was strong in the discus.”
The Kaua‘i High School girls team finished in fifth place with 29.20 points, edging out Ka‘u High School by just .20 point for the position, according to results posted on www.sportshigh.com.
Smith-Wishard paced the Red Raider girls with a gold medal in the 1500 meter run where she improved on her preliminary run to finish 4:51.29 in the finals (4:58.56 prelim). Smith-Wishard also garnered a fifth place in the 3000 meter run with a 11:01.82 performance.
Fellow Red Raider Jamilee Jimenez, followed with a third place in the long jump with a leap of 16’8.25.” Tiffany Ikeda-Simao followed in that event at fifth place with a leap of 16’5.25.”
Jimenez was locked in a four-way tie for sixth place in the high jump where she cleared 4’11,” short of her performances here where she had topped the 5-feet mark at some of the qualifying meets.
Ikeda-Simao went on to place sixth in the 100 meter dash on a 12.76 run.
Both Jimenez and Ikeda-Simao were part of the Kaua‘i 4×100 meter relay team which finished second on a 49.56 final run, trimming .29 off their preliminary showing. The Menehune girls team finished 20th in that event on a 53.94 run.
Cayla Kitabayashi led the way for Waimea, the speedster finishing 14th in the 100 meter hurdles on a 17.00 run. She was closely dogged by Kapa‘a runner Karyn Nahtice Nield who finished 21st on a 17.38 run. Waimea’s Sunni Acosta followed at 22nd in the event on a 17.61 run.
Nahtice Nield went on to finish 19th in the 300 meter hurdles where she clocked in at 52.13.
Manaku finished seventh in the discus with a toss of 110’5,” and 25th in the shot put event with a put of 29’5.5.”
Chris Newcomb of Waimea High School led the boys’ contingent as he took second in the boys high jump, clearing 6’4.”
In the long jump, Pono Matthews of Kaua‘i beat out Waimea’s Bailon Batalion on a leap of 19’8.5” compared with Batalion’s final jump of 18’8.5.”
Batalion commanded the Kaua‘i showing in the triple jump with a leap of 42’1” for eighth place overall.
Tyrus Ceria-Lux and Aric Cansino of Kaua‘i High School placed 25th and 26th with leaps of 38’00” and 37’7.75,” respectively.
Joseph Velasco of Kapa‘a High School finished 18th in the 110 meter hurdles event with a 16.59 run.
He followed that event with a 44.39 run in the 300 meter hurdles for 26th place.
Waimea High School, which finished 19th in team placement with eight points, edged out Kaua‘i High School in the 4×100 meter relay race.
The Menehune team ended in ninth place with 44.77 followed by Kaua‘i in 11th place on a 44.82 run.
