Hatsuyo Matsunaga
Hatsuyo “Hattie” Matsunaga of Lihu‘e died at home on April 29, 2007, at the age of 87.
Born in Kapa‘a, a graduate of Hawaiian Mission Academy, she retired from Sears Roebuck and Co. in Lihu‘e as a credit manager.
Preceded in death by husband Haruo Matsunaga and brother Makoto Murata, she is survived by daughter Susan E. Matsunaga; siblings Yaeko Kinoshita, Akira “Rocky” Murata, Mieko “Miki” Bankson, Yoshie Yamakawa, and Doris Kirio; numerous nieces and nephews.
Private services were held. Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the Matsunaga family with arrangements.
George Rita
George Rita of Tacoma, Wash., died May 13, 2007, at the age of 80.
Born Feb. 22, 1927, in Makaweli, he moved to Tacoma, in 1949, and lived there until his death. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran in World War II. As a teenager living on Kaua‘i, he witnessed first-hand the two waves of Japanese bombers as they headed to Pearl Harbor prompting him to lie about his age in order to serve his country during WWII.
He retired from Schneider-Simpson Sheet Metal in 1996.
Preceded in death by his parents Frank and Martha Rita, brother August and two sisters Lovina and Mary, he is survived by his wife Muriel A. Rita, daughters Susan (Sam) Anderson, Annie (Steven) Smith, stepdaughter Maureen L. Ryan; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Friday, May 18, at 2 p.m. at Mountain View Memorial Park, Valley Chapel, Tacoma, Wash. Pictures may be viewed at mountainviewtacoma.com.
