The Waika‘ea Canal in Kapa‘a, long plagued by excessive silting and sand buildup will soon be dredged, the Department of Land and Natural Resources announced in a recent press release.
Gov. Linda Lingle has approved the contract to have Hawaiian Dredging and Construction begin the $1.1-million project Eastside fisherman have been requesting.
“This is great news for the many regular users,” Sen. Gary L. Hooser states in the release. “I have been pushing to have this work done now for several years and it is long overdue.”
Funding was originally approved by the legislature in 2005 and then again in 2006. The construction bids were opened on Dec. 26, 2006, approval from the Governor’s office was requested on Jan. 10, and final approval granted by the governor on April 21.
In other harbor developments, Congresswoman Mazie Hirono issued a statement that the Army Corps of Engineers has allocated $15 million from their FY2007 budget for construction work at Kikiaola Harbor.
At Port Allen small boat harbor, improvements are also moving forward with the legislature’s allocation of funds to design harbor improvements that will replace concrete slips that have recently collapsed.
Once the design phase is complete, additional funds will be requested to construct new facilities.
