A 28-year-old Kapa‘a man fleeing police crashed his car into the corner of a house Sunday night at 1710 Awaa subdivision in Kapahi, injuring a resident inside.
Kaua‘i police arrested Christopher Almeida around midnight and charged him with resisting arrest, reckless driving, first-degree criminal property damage, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and drunk driving, Public Information Officer Mary Daubert said Monday.
Law authorities signaled Almeida to stop his vehicle in Kapa‘a town at around 11 p.m., but he fled the scene, colliding into a police cruiser before escaping.
Police gave chase but lost sight of the vehicle, a press release states.
At around 11:20 p.m., police received a 911 call about a vehicle crashing into a Kapahi home and the driver fleeing on foot.
Emergency crews transported an injured man, who was watching television in the living room when the crash occurred, to Wilcox Memorial Hospital for treatment.
A woman later drove to the scene of the crash and reported to police that Almeida was hiding in her home a few doors down, according to the release.
He was arrested shortly afterward and is being held at a Kaua‘i Police Department cellblock in lieu of $23,650 bail.
Chris Jensen, president of Jensen of Hawai‘i, which has been hired to repair the home, estimated a quarter of the house was damaged.
The entire corner of the structure was damaged and had to be shored up for safety, he said. Windows were destroyed by the crash, and the openings had to be measured for replacement.
Jensen also owns the video surveillance company that installed cameras at nearby Honsador Lumber Co., which captured still images of the crash.
