County officials announced that they will be enforcing Article 7, Section 21-7.3 (a) of the County Code which prescribes disposal restrictions for cardboard, metal and green waste generated by business, industrial and other non-residential sources.
The ordinance is being enforced in order to divert recyclable materials from the county landfill. Landfill staff have begun screening loads delivered to the landfill, and will begin fining haulers with non-compliant loads starting July 16.
Businesses that generate cardboard, metal and green waste should establish recycling programs for these materials. Commercially generated cardboard is accepted at Garden Isle Disposal in Lihu‘e, ferrous metal (such as steel, iron) is accepted at Puhi Metals in Puhi for a fee, non-ferrous metal (such as aluminum, copper, brass) is accepted at Reynold’s Recycling in Lihu‘e. Green waste may be accepted at the County Refuse Transfer Stations upon surrendering of the appropriate tipping fee coupon, which can be purchased from the Department of Motor Vehicles.
