Huntington Beach, CA. — Brian Bielmann of Hale‘iwa, O‘ahu is one of the photographers whose work is featured in the Red Bull Illume show that opened June 6.
Bielmann, the winner of the Spirit category, joins a field of international photographers whose work is featured in the first-ever action and adventure sports photography competition. The show “illuminated” the sands of Huntington Beach with a larger-than-life surfside exhibition featuring 50 of the best raw moments in action and adventure sports from across the globe, states a press release from Surf Art News.
More than 2,000 spectators flocked to the popular California beach to watch as 25 eight-foot glass and metal cubes illuminated the sands, revealing the most dramatic compilation of action and adventure sports imagery.
The Red Bull Illume-winning images were selected from more than 7,200 submissions from more than 90 countries.
“Red Bull Illume is the first-ever photo contest to exclusively honor the men and women behind the camera in the outdoor and adventure sports world,” said athlete Steve Fisher whose extreme kayaking adventure is featured in the exhibition. “For the first time, these talented photographers are put on a pedestal and are getting the credit they deserve. It’s like the Oscars of the outdoor sports world!”
Joining Bielmann in the Top Ten are Desre Pickers of South Africa (Lifestyle), David Blazek of the Czech Republic (Sequence), Dawn Kish of Flagstaff, AZ. (Close-Up), Thomas Stockli of Switzerland (Energy), Wojtek Antonow of Poland (Playground), Fred Mortagne of France (Wings), Jimmy Wilson of Melbourne Beach, FL. (New Creativity), Tim McKenna of Australia (Experimental) and Gian Paul Lozza of Switzerland (Illumination).
According to his Web site, Bielmann has been shooting photos for almost 30 years, with many of his photos appearing in every major surf magazine in the world.
He is also the senior staff photographer for Trans World Surf Magazine.
