Spend some time in the sun taking care of Kaua‘i at tomorrow morning’s Lydgate Beach Clean-up. John Lydgate under the auspices of the adopt-a-park program has taken it upon himself to become a “steward of the land.” Tammy Andersland, Lydgate’s writing partner and four-year on-going participant in the clean-up, said, “It’s a feeling of great accomplishment to know you’ve done something to take care of our island.”
On average, the event draws about 12 people, “but we need more help, we welcome families, visitors or residents who care about keeping our beaches beautiful,” said Andersland.
The activities include collecting debris, trash, wood, pulling weeds, painting tables, and all- around beautification of the area.
“I really have to give credit to John who is out there, every day, taking care of the park the way his grandfather did. He rakes leaves, waters the trees, plants new trees, picks up drift- wood — everyday, he’s out there,” she said.
The event has carried on for years, through word-of-mouth, or spontaneous helpers who see the clean-up and jump in. Everyone is invited and all are encouraged to bring sunscreen. Water thing is provided.
Lydgate said, “If you have roots here, grow some branches.”
