For the first time on Kaua‘i, Women in Theater will present the hit show “Cabaret” at KCC Performing Arts Center. The 1966 Broadway musical set in pre-war Berlin is a fantastic romp of song and dance.
The success of the play warranted a film, directed by Bob Fosse starring Liza Minnelli, released in 1972. This must-see show has been draped in Tony awards from the first performance to subsequent revivals — with a 1998 star-making performance by Alan Cumming as the Emcee.
Overseeing the action of the play is the Emcee, who presides as master of ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub, harnessing the circus of social upheaval on the eve of the Nazi uprising.
The play, which balances drama and extravagant musical numbers, centers on a young and talented English cabaret singer, Sally Bowles, who is involved with a young American writer, Cliff Bradshaw. A sub-plot foreshadows anti-Semitic Germany with a romance between German boarding house owner Fräulein Schneider and one of her tenants, a Jewish fruit vendor, Herr Schultz.
“The show is not suitable for children,” states a recent press release.
