As part of their physical education program, Island School students in grades kindergarten through fifth teamed up to jump rope and shoot hoops.
Island School has participated in the American Heart
Association fund-raisers Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart for the past 16 years, under the direction of PE teacher, Jackie Mierta.
“Our students look forward to this annual heart-healthy event each year and know that one of the best ways to take care of their heart is to make exercise a regular part of their everyday life,” stated Mierta. “We’re pleased to partner with Kaua‘i’s new AHA coordinator, Cherylann Farrell.”
“The American Heart Association welcomes and appreciates the participation of our schools, because research shows regular physical activity is associated with a healthier, longer life and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and some cancers,” said Farrell. “Benefits extend beyond health improvements. Several studies have shown a link between increased physical fitness and academic performance.”
Mierta announced this year’s top
fund-raisers at the school’s Morning Circle: 3rd grader Kayla Johnson and 2nd grader
Tanner Tavares.
A $3000 check for the American Heart Association was presented by Island School to Farrell last week.
“We look forward to next year’s Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart event at Island School and all the schools on Kaua‘i.” says Farrell.
