The annual tree giveaway celebrating Arbor Day has always been popular.
Hosted by the Kaua‘i Landscape Industry Council, the event got a headstart for this year when Kaua‘i Mayor Bryan Baptiste issued an Arbor Day proclamation announcing Nov. 7 as Kaua‘i’s special day when people can get free trees through the KLIC.
J. Sterling Morton proposed in 1872 that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees. This was celebrated with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska, states the proclamation presented to Maureen Murphy and Gabrielle Young of the Kaua‘i Outdoor Circle.
Nov. 7 will be the 135th anniversary of Arbor Day that is now celebrated throughout the nation and the world.
The proclamation goes on to state that trees can reduce the erosion of precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife.
Trees are a renewable resource that provides paper, wood for homes, fuel for fires and serve to beautify communities.
Trees also serve as a source of joy and renewal wherever they are planted, the proclamation says.
Through the proclamation, Baptiste encourages Kauaians to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands.
