County and Coast Guard rescuers searched into the night yesterday for a 41-year-old male swimmer who went missing near Larsen’s Beach. The man’s wife was rescued from the water, along with a man who became distressed after trying to help the couple.
The status of the missing male was not known as of press time.
County spokeswoman Mary Daubert said that a 911 call about the swimmers was received at 5:45 p.m. yesterday.
Four rescue specialists from the Lihu‘e fire station and four firemen from the Hanalei station responded to the scene.
After pulling the first two individuals from the water, the first responders began intersurf break and beach searches, Daubert said.
The Coast Guard and Inter-Island helicopter Air-1 were subsequently called in to assist in the search.
Daubert said the county stopped its search at 7:20 p.m. but that the Coast Guard would continue at its discretion.
“Sometimes they (search) all night,” she said.
The county planned to resume its search this morning pending results of the Coast Guard effort.
The female and Good Samaritan were in good condition following their rescues.
