The Garden Island Arts Council presents a Polaroid transfer workshop led by Barbara Smith this weekend. Even for those with little or no experience in art or photography, this process is simple to learn and fun. It doesn’t involve paint, working in a dark room, or a computer.
Polaroid image transfer is the process of prematurely peeling apart a Polacolor print, discarding the positive and transferring the negative onto a non-photographic surface such as watercolor paper. This creates a subtly textured 3-inch by 4-inch image reminiscent of an ancient fresco with an ethereal quality that transcends the ordinary photograph. Bring a few of your favorite 35 mm slides and 4-inch by 6-inch prints.
Smith has been making Polaroid transfers and teaching this simple yet fascinating technique for over 15 years. Her first book, “The Art & Craft of Keepsake Photography” was published in 2007, and her second book will follow in the spring of 2008.
