The Kaua‘i Society of Artists invites all adult Kaua‘i resident artists to enter the upcoming, annual juried Art Kauai 2007 exhibition. Entries are due on Sept. 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kukui Grove Exhibition Hall (Unit B-6) in Lihu‘e. The exhibition opens the following weekend with a reception Sept. 22, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and continues through Oct. 26.
Art Kauai is the premier showcase for the visual arts on Kaua‘i. This exhibition highlights the quality, range, and creativity of the island’s artists, and each year features some of Kaua‘i’s best known, as well as upcoming artists. Awards will be given including acquisitions for the state’s Art in Public Places collection.
Juror for the exhibit will be Gregg Hertzlieb, director/curator of the Brauer Museum of Art at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana. The Brauer Museum of Art is home to a nationally recognized collection of 19th and 20th century American art, with more than 2,800 works of art from the mid-19th century to the present. Hertzlieb is also an exhibiting artist working primarily in watercolor, and pen and ink. His work combines a biologist’s eye for interesting living creatures with a social critic’s eye for human effects on the landscape.
“I hope to tell a story in my pictures,” says Hertzlieb, “and the story is basically an extended investigation of who I am and what I discover in the landscape of both my imagination and the region I call home. Overall, my art takes me on a quirky, surreal journey of self-discovery, where pleasant characters get invented in the process that, through their disarmingly unusual natures and appearances, encourage viewers to perhaps plumb their own imaginations and delight in the wonders they may find there.”
While on Kaua‘i, Hertzlieb will be giving a free evening presentation on Sept. 18, at 6 p.m. in the exhibition space focusing on the Brauer Museum’s collections, as well as Hertzlieb’s work as a curator and artist. He will also give a “walk and talk” through the exhibition on opening night, Sept. 22.
While KSA membership is not required, there is an entry fee. Artists are reminded that this is a juried exhibit with works chosen for the exhibit from entries, and there are no refunds of entry fees for unaccepted works.
