The Kapa‘a Eagles drew a bye for this weekend, but that was not a reason to sleep in.
Volunteers were on hand at Wal-Mart early yesterday morning to get rid of 1,100 boxes of Krispy Kreme donuts parents and players had sold.
“This is the only time we can do it,” one parent said. “Other times we have games so every one is out at the fields.”
Brian Aiwohi, one of the parent leaders for the Kapa‘a Pop Warner Association, said the funds generated from the sale of the Krispy Kreme morsels are intended to help with traveling expenses for the three divisions of football teams when they travel to O‘ahu during the Thanksgiving Day weekend to play against the Kaneohe association.
While the majority of the donuts had been pre-sold, the Eagles’ volunteers set up two stations to facilitate pickup.
Customers who already had tickets simply drove past a tent near the Garden entrance to Wal-Mart for pickup. For those who needed to pick up more, or for those who didn’t get pre-sale tickets, a “Cash Only” table was set up outside the store’s main entrance to accomodate those customers.
Aiwohi said he didn’t know if any more fundraisers will be held.
“It depends on how everything goes this weekend,” he said.
Next Saturday, the Kapa‘a Eagles travel to Hanapepe Stadium where they open against Kekaha starting at 8 a.m.
“We’ll be back on the field, again,” the parent volunteer said. “You gotta get yours now because next week, we’re back in Hanapepe.”
