WAIMEA — Hamiha Arquette served 11 in a row and posted five aces in Game 5 to lift Waimea High School’s junior varsity team over Kapa‘a High School Wednesday night in Waimea. Waimea won 23-25, 25-16, 22-25, 25-14 and 15-2.
After Waimea and Kapa‘a split their first two games and Kapa‘a took the advantage by taking Game 3, Waimea came out in Game 4 with an ace by Brandee Victorino. Then they proceeded to walk over Kapa‘a, jumping to a 9-point lead. But an ace and solid setting by Kapa‘a’s Mele Yama brought the Warriors back in the game.
Not folding under the pressure, Victorino served two aces in a row to keep them ahead. They won Game 4 by 11 points to force Game 5.
Yama went back to serve to start the game, but as soon as the Menehune gained possession, they kept it and refused to give it back. Arquette led Waimea to the half-way point and the court switch did nothing to ice down her arm. She hit ace after ace as and was backed up with smart playing by her teammates to secure the win. Waimea is off for the rest of the week and resumes play on Wednesday when the Menehune host the Red Raiders of Kaua‘i.
