HANAPEPE – Trey Aguano opened the weekend with fireworks, launching three touchdown passes to keep the Koloa JPW undefeated.
In addition to the three scoring hits, Aguano connected with three point-after passes to lead Koloa to a 34-6 win over the Kapa‘a Eagles JPW in the first of five games hosted by the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Association at Hanapepe Stadium, Saturday.
That contest was followed by Chivas Alapai running for two TDs to lead the Kapa‘a Eagles Midgets to a 22-0 shutout over the Koloa Midgets.
Kaikea Sonoda ran for two TDs to lead the Hanapepe Colts JPW to its 19-6 showing over Kekaha, and Pono Rull passed for two TDs and ran for two more to lead the Kekaha PeeWees to an explosive 32-28 win over Hanapepe.
In the final contest, Kele Hanohano of Kekaha and Jae Delos Reyes of Hanapepe were matched by point-after boots from Ken Morikawa Jr. of Kekaha and Wyatt Chicoine as both teams battled to an 8-8 tie, the scoring exchange coming in the final quarter.
Edsel Lactaotao continued to ink for the Kapa‘a Eagles JPW, the runningback making his mark at the 8-minute mark to keep the Eagles from being shut out.
Kelson Andrade opened the books with the first of two Koloa JPW TDs in the first quarter, Andrade scoring on a 4-yard run at the 5:29 mark.
The 6-0 margin was upped with 26 ticks on the clock as Aguano launched the first of many passes, this one a 21-yarder to Tystin Gummerus for the score. Kyren Rapapcon, who added the final Koloa TD in the fourth quarter with a 48-yard run, did the point-after honors for the 13-0 read after one quarter.
Aguano added another TD hit to Gummerus in the second quarter followed it with a point-after pass to Kalawaia Judd for the 20-0 halftime lead.
Andrade was the recipient of a third quarter Aguano scoring pass, a 63-yarder, and Gummerus pulled in the point-after pass for the 27-0 margin to set up Lactaotao’s and Rapacon’s TDs in the final frame.
With the victory, Koloa remains undefeated with a 6-0 record and 12 points in the JPW standings followed by Kapa‘a at 4-2 and 8 points.
Hanapepe Colts JPW, with its win over Kekaha, follows in third place with a 3-3 showing and 6 points followed by the Lihu‘e Patriots JPW who are 1-4 and 2 points. Kekaha, 0-5, rounds out the division.
Aaron Nagao gave the Kapa‘a Eagles Midget defense a TD with a 49-yard runback of a plucked pass at the 7:47 mark of the first quarter. Bronson Aiwohi added the point-after boot which gave the Eagles an early 8-0 lead.
Enter Alapai who nailed the first of his two TDs with a 3-yard run through the line for the 14-0 read after one quarter.
Alapai added his second TD, a 28-yard scamper, in the second period and Aiwohi’s point-after boot accounted for the final math that came in the first half.
The win keeps Kapa‘a in second place of the Midget division with a 3-2-1 record and 7 points, just one short of Kekaha who kept its 4-0-1 record and 8 points intact with its Saturday win. Hanapepe, with its loss to Kekaha, is in third place at 2-2-2 and 6 points followed by Lihu‘e, 2-3 and 4 points. Koloa, 1-5 and 2 points, rounds out the division.
Kaikea Sonoda opened the second quarter by plunging to paydirt on the first play of the quarter, capping a long Hanapepe drive that downed the ball at the 1-yard line at the end of the frame.
Hanapepe QB Mikey Rita gave the pigskin a 42-yard run with 6:29 left in the half and a Sonoda run on the point-after have Hanapepe a 13-0 halftime lead.
Sonoda opened the final frame on a 3-yard run before Kekaha’s Keilan Malama connected with Matthew Garcia for a 52-yard TD with 1:20 remaining to prevent a shutout.
Paul Oligo opened the scorebooks in the first quarter to give Kekaha an early 6-0 lead before Rull exploded for two TD passes to Winna Kaohelaulii in the second period.
The first Rull TD hit peeled off 65 yards, and with just 14 ticks in the half, added another 59-yard pass. Errol Lanning’s point-after boot saw Kekaha in control 20-0 at the half.
But the Colts were not done as Kenneth Tacazon answered with a 47-yard TD in the third frame with Cy Corona adding the PAT run ffor the 20-7 read.
Rull and Tacazon battled in the fourth frame, with Rull opening on an 8-yard run, the first of five TDs scored in the final quarter.
Tacazon answered with a 70-yard kickoff return, graced by Rhandy Compoc-Dela Cruz running in the PAT for the 26-14 read.
With 3:33 left on the clock, Rull scored on a 2-yard run only to have Tacazon answer at the 2:58 mark on a 5-yard scoring run. He added another digit on a PAT run for the 32-21 read.
With just 39 seconds left in the game, Compoc-Dela Cruz broke open for an 82-yard scoring run and a Tacazon PAT run accounted for the 32-28 final.
Despite coming up short, Hanapepe still controls the Pee Wee standings with a 3-1-1 record and 7 points. Kekaha is chasing a point with a 3-1 record aned 6 points followed by Lihu’e, 1-2 and 2 points. Kapa’a, 0-3-1 and a point rounds out the standings.
Games continue Saturday at Vidinha Stadium staring at 9 a.m.
Koloa will host Kekaha for JPW and Midget games starting at 9 a.m. Lihu‘e will host Kapa‘a in the afternoon series starting at 1 p.m.
