The Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay is supporting a new program called “Growing Our Own Teachers on Kaua‘i,” sponsored by the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
Prospective teachers pursuing their credentials through Kaua‘i Community College are faced with the financial hardship of working without pay their final semester. To assist them, the Rotary Club raised the funds for 13 candidates. Students need $4,000 to complete their training.
Rotary was tasked to raise $52,000. Cal Stanny offered the club a challenge: If it could raise $17,000, the Stanny Foundation would match it.
Through the efforts of the Scholarship Chair Robert Dickstein and the assistance of clubs at Kapa‘a, Po’ipu Beach and Kalepa Sunrise, Hanalei exceeded the $52,000 goal and received the Stanny Foundation Grant.
The scholarship committee, consisting of Rotarians from the participating clubs, interviewed potential candidates on Nov. 10.
Kaua‘i resident Ka‘ani Blackwell is the program’s administrator and a professor at University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
