Juliet has had enough. Enough with the poison, enough with the stabbing, and especially enough with the dying. She wants a new story and she wants it now. More parts for girls. More romance. Less death. Romeo and Juliet will never be the same — or will they? Not everyone’s so keen on the changes. And why is Romeo trying to sneak off with Rosaline?
Sixteen talented high school actors will present, “Drop Dead, Juliet.” a comedy in one act by Allison Williams and produced with permission from Theatrefolk Ontario, Canada. Leading the cast are seniors Richelle Ridenour and Tayler James as Juliet and William Shakespeare, and freshman Sam Dunham as Romeo.
“I sent a copy of this script to a couple of my students over the summer,” says director Peggy Ellenburg. “They gave me the thumbs up on “Drop Dead, Juliet” right away. They liked it because it’s so darn funny.”
One of the things Ellenburg is enjoying about this production is that an alumna from the Island School class of 2002 is doing the costumes. “Caira Nakasone performed every year she was at Island School. It’s such a gift to have her back helping with this show,” says Ellenburg. Other adults involved in this production are Jim Bray, who heads the Drama Department, Denese Alcott, a former Island School parent, and Debbie Ridenour, whose daughter plays Juliet.
Three high school students will play live music for the masque scene, where Romeo and Juliet meet. Lauren Hoffman will play violin, Lexa Mink-Flacco will play flute, and Anthony Erik will be on piano. Lauren is a member of the Honolulu Youth Symphony Orchestra.
The show runs this weekend only. Tickets are on sale from cast members and at the Island School Office for $5. Admission at the door is $6. For more information, contact Ellenburg at 246-0233, ext. 262 or at peggy@ischool.org.
