Children who enjoy Ke Ala Hele Makalae (The Path that Goes by the Coast) will have the opportunity to enter an essay-writing contest and win a certificate for a new bicycle and helmet.
The contest is sponsored by Kauai Path with the support of three local businesses. Two topics should be addressed in the content of the essay “Why I Love Ke Ala Hele Makalae”:
• Why the author loves the coastal walking and bicycle paths
• Why the author feels the Kaua‘i Coastal Path is good for Kaua‘i
Submissions should be mailed to Essay Contest, Kauai Path, P.O. Box 81, Lihu‘e, 96766. The contest deadline is 5 p.m., Jan. 31. Contestants must include their date of birth, mailing address, and a contact phone number.
Two age groups are eligible and each age group has a different word length requirement. The older group consists of children born between Feb. 14, 1994, and Feb. 14, 1998. The older group essay word length is limited to 250 words or less. The younger group are those born after Feb. 14, 1998. The younger group word length is limited to 100 words or less.
Anonymous judges will read essays for creativity, clarity, style and evidence of personal experience on Ke Ala Hele Makalae. Essays will not be returned and become the property of Kauai Path.
Two contest winners will be announced on Valentine’s Day.
The goal of the children’s essay contest is to increase public awareness, appreciation and use of Ke Ala Hele Makalae, the pedestrian and bicycle paths on Kaua‘i’s Eastside.
Kauai Path supports safe path recreation and transportation for all children and is a non-profit, volunteer organization operating in fiscal partnership with Garden Island Resource Conservation and Development. Additional information on Kauai Path programs is posted at www.KauaiPath.org
