The woman accused of stabbing another woman multiple times in a former Harbor Mall restaurant will be under further review for her fitness to proceed, a judge ruled yesterday.
Yu Mei Liu faces second-degree attempted murder charges in connection with the stabbing. The victim in the case, an alleged “other woman,” Ping Zhou, now lives with Liu’s husband, Simon Lin, in O‘ahu.
Liu’s court appearance was on the one-year anniversary of the alleged attack, in which witnesses stated they saw Liu chase Zhou and stab her. Witnesses also said Zhou collapsed on the ground inside Lin’s former restaurant, Tokyo Lobby.
One of the witnesses to the incident was Ben Montgomery, who was given a merit award by police for breaking up the altercation.
Michael Soong, Liu’s attorney, said the court was provided a letter by a doctor indicating Liu is not fit to proceed.
Another hearing to determine Liu’s fitness to proceed is scheduled for Feb. 28.
Until that time, Liu will remain in the Hawai‘i State Hospital in Kaneohe.
