Kathy Conradi, a nurse at the Wilcox Memorial Hospital, has seen it all.
“She was the nurse when Avelina was born,” said Tracy Kuhaulua, grandmother of Kaua‘i’s New Year baby. “And today, she was the nurse on duty when Haweo was born.”
The son of Avelina Kuhaulua and Keali‘i Kanei, Haweo Kuhaulua-Kanei arrived at 10:08 a.m. yesterday morning with the distinction of being the first baby born in 2008 on Kaua‘i.
“We came in at about 11 a.m. New Year’s Eve,” said Kanei. “The first contractions started just as the Ball in New York started to drop. We were watching it on TV.”
Ten hours later, Haweo made his appearance on Kaua‘i, weighing in at 7 pounds 15 ounces and measuring 21.25 inches.
Haweo is Kuhaulua’s first child and Kanei’s second. On hand to share the joy of the new arrival was Leina, 2, Kanei’s daughter.
“The amazing thing is that this is the same room Leina was born in two years ago,” the proud grandmother said.
And following the arrival of Haweo, the Kuhaulua family started getting ready for the other big event of the day: the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.
